The Greek Islands, with more than 12.000.000 inhabitants, are divided in archipelagoes: cyclades, Dodecaneso, Ionic, Esporades, Islands of the North of the Aegean Sea and those of the Saronicos Gulf. The Islands conform a beautiful mosaic of more than 2000 islands, whith around 200 are inhabited. Isla Griega, means paradise for the traveler who wants to live through the essence of the western civilization. culture, art, mixed with an unforgettable landscape of crystalline waters and blue skies that remains in the memory of the traveller. Athens is the capital and the major city.
WEATHER The climate of Greece is similar any other Mediterranean countries. In the low lands, the summers are dry, warm and with clear skies, and rainy winters. The zones of mountain are much colder, and with major rainfalls. The snow and the frosts are not frequent in the low lands, but they cover the mountains in winter. The rainfall is very different from one region to other one. In Tesalia, some years it falls less than 38 mm, whereas in certain parts of the western coast they receive near 1.300 mm. The annual everage temperature in Athens is around 17C.
SHOPPING The real antiques are very rare and expensive, and is prohibited its exportation. The beautiful objects and furniture of last centuries are so expensive as in any other place. Not like the ceramics, the embroideries, the tapestries, the goldwork, jerseys of wool, embroidered blouses, lots of hand made pieces. The traveller can find, sometimes, on Saturday morning, with little luck and many patience, some precious object in Athens, in the street Hefaistos. The most beautiful leather works come from Kastoria's region; the tapestries more interesting, of Metsovon and of Arachova. Crete and Skyros: carved furniture, in Ioannina and Athens: jewels, silver, objects of copper; in Amaroussion, in Kifissia's highway, permanent exhibition of ceramics proceeding from the whole Greece.
GASTRONOMY Given the geography and the history of Greece, the kitchen style is typically Mediterranean, with strong influences of Italy, the Middle East and of the gastronomias proceeding from the Balkans. The origins of todays dishes defer from the ones in the classic Greece. The Greek doesnt agree with the refinements of other gastronomies. Since general feature the Greek plates serve themselves mas moderated that you warm. The area of the country is very favorable to the care of the sheeps and so there is an abundance of plates with this type of meat. The fish dishes are common specially in the coastal zones and in the islands. Also they are used in Greece a great variety of cheeses, including the feta, kasseri, and mizithra.
